Shrine of Nuestra Senora de Las Lajas

This is a Gothic church located 7 km away from Ipiales, on a bridge over a spectacular gorge of the River Guaitara, According to a legend, an image of the Virgin Mary appeared in the mid eighteenth century into a huge rock on the river.

The church was erected so that the rock and the image of the virgin form its high altar. Pilgrims from all parts of Colombia and Ecuador come over to the place where, of course, there are many stories of miraculous events. The accommodation provides a small but cozy convent, located up the road from the church, it is obviously ascetic.
