Caracas, 26 Jul. AVN.- During the 16th and 17th August, the Foundation for the Support of Scientific Research of the State of Sao Paulo (FAPESP) and National Institute for Space Research (INPE), both institutions in Brazil, held a seminar, which aims to discuss the outcome of the assessments by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, for its acronym in English) in the context of the Special Report on Risk Management and Disaster Extreme Weather Events (SREX also for its acronym in English) in South America and Central America.
This activity will take place in the city of Sao Paulo, entitled “Risk management of extreme weather events and disasters in Central America and South America – What can we learn from the IPCC Special Report on Extreme Events – SREX?” tries to present scientific information related to the potential impacts of the risks of extreme weather events such as heatwaves, records high temperatures and heavy rainfall, as well as those related disasters.
A press release explains that this seminar is to bring together business leaders, academics, researchers and civil society organizations whose policies and programs may be affected by extreme weather events.
The conference will address topics such as exposure and vulnerability in the context of the report, with comments on extreme weather events, impacts and losses and risk management options for improving current practices and future.
Consisting of nine chapters and four annexes, Special Report on Risk Management of Extreme Weather Events and Disasters (SREX) of the IPCC was prepared for two years by 220 authors from 62 countries in the working groups I and II of the IPCC panel itself . It received 18,784 comments from governments, international experts and agencies for three rounds of review.
According to the IPCC assessments, the seminar will be held in Sao Paulo is one of a series of events as a matter of regional discussions, conducted in 2012 in different parts of the world in order to provide information on potential impacts of events extreme weather and disasters by region, plus options for managing the potential risks caused by them.
According to a press release, the event will include a press conference, a presentation of the Special Report by the authors, special sessions aimed at discussing the national and regional policies and a set of mini workshops are to ensure dialogue on the implications of the Special Report to stakeholders and policy makers at local, regional and national levels. –
